  • 1st Va Training Weekend March 26, 27 and 28


  • Ladies and Gentlemen,
    We are now taking written confirmations regarding the 3rd Annual Lee-Jackson 
    Family Reunion Dinner!  The event is set for Saturday, March 13, 2010,
     at the Pine Mountain Grill  in Whitesburg, KY.  
     It will begin at 6:00 and last until 9:30.  If you are interested in 
     attending, please send notice via email so we can order the food and insure seating. 
     
      The deadline is January 02, 2010.   To date we have over fifty confirmations.  The only 
      fee is for the dinner buffet featuring the Grill’s famed home-style southern buffet:
        The evening will begin at 6:00 pm with a social hour.  Dinner will follow.  
    	The agenda will include disseminating information regarding events for 2010
     (reenactments, presentations, dedications, UDC, OCR, CWRT, etc) developing schedules 
     of events for the forthcoming year, surprise guest speakers, music and door prizes.

    Washington Rifles Business Meeting
    
    The second business meeting and also the last meeting of the year will be held at The 
    Washington County Library at 2:00 pm in the conference room there. Our 2010 schedule will
     be voted on and set for the coming year and final plans for the Battle of Aiken. At the 
     first Business meeting in January the company voted to hold our School of the Soldier in
     Russell County on the farm of Pvt. Richardson again this year. Final plans for the 
     training weekend will be made at the February meeting. Also a decision will be made at 
     what event company pictures will be taken. We will also discuss plans for a company fund 
     raiser. This is our last meeting because from this point on we will gather at 
     reenactments and living histories. Members will be able to order powder 
     and caps and pay dues and insurance for 2010.

    Events marked with a * are on the 1st Virginia Company D Schedule for 2010. Those marked
     with two * are under consideration and will be voted on at the next meeting.
    
    February 6, 2010- There will be a Lee/Jackson Dinner in Greeneville, TN, on February 6,
    2010, starting at 6:00.   It is being held at the following restaurant:  Chuckwagon 
    Bar-B-Que & Grill (423-783-0022), located at 1175 E Andrew Johnson Hwy, Greeneville, TN 
    37745; The Honorable H. K. Edgerton will be there, along with General Morgan, and others.
      General Lee will be present and offer a few words regarding For the Love of Dixie.

    Weekend; Location: On the farm of Pvt. Jimmy Richardson in Russell County Virginia; 
    Training Weekend – School of the Soldier; this will be a Southwest Virginia Brigade event;
     Directions to the site:
    
    From Abingdon, Virginia
    
    Take Route 19 toward Tazewell/ Bluefield
    
    Pass through Lebanon, Virginia and continue on Route 19 to Rosedale
    
    At the traffic light at Rosedale turn left on Route 80, The Redbud Hwy. and 
    Travel West toward Honaker, Virginia. for apx. 4.6 miles.
    
    
    Turn right on Route 67, The Swords Creek Road, and travel west for 3.6 miles.
    
    After passing E. Dillon (a rock quarry) and crossing a railroad track,
     turn right on Route 633, Clark’s Valley Road and travel .6 miles.
     
    
    Turn right on Route 781, Richardson Road and travel .5 miles to the camp site.

    April 16, 17 and 18, 2010-Sitka, KY;  Battle of Hager’s Farm (5725 KY Route 1559); New
     Event honoring the 150th anniversary of the WBTS Mountain Home Place; Contact Heather

    *April 16, 17 and 18, 2010 – Tazewell, VA; The Skirmish at Jeffersonville; This event is 
    held near Tazewell, Virginia, at the Crab Orchard Museum and Pioneer Park; This year will
     be the 6th annual event and will feature battles on Saturday and Sunday. Sadly the 
     Chairman of the event Mr. Bob McGraw has passed away this year; He will be missed by the 
     reenacting community; A special event is scheduled this year in his honor and memory; Our
      own Major Monte baker has been chosen to be the overall Confederate commander on the
       field and our good friend Lt. Gen. Dane Brewer will command the Union forces on the 
       field  
    
    **April 23, 24 and 25, 2010-Bulls Gap, TN:  The Battle of Bulls Gap.  I will be one of the
     event Coordinators and we are working to set this up as a Spring Drill (get the cobwebs
      out) event with the participating events actually directly involved in setting up the
       battle scenarios based on General Breckenridge’s November 1864 action here in East 
       Tennessee;  Friday evening tactical; Battles Saturday and Sunday at 2:00pm; www.etcwc.

    **April 24 and 25, 2010-Cumberland Gap, TN:  Confederate & Union Troops withdraw over the
     mountain to National Park Headquarters; Also Living History in Town for non-marchers. 9:

    May or June, 2010- Reenactment at the Breaks Interstate Park; Sponsored by 
    the 29th irginia Infantry; 2nd Annual Event; Last season this event was held on the 2nd 
    weekend inMay but no date has been set for this years event; The park is located on 
    Route 80 between Haysi, Virginia and Elkhorn City, Kentucky
    
    May 21, 22 and 23, 2010-McLean County, KY: 16th Annual Battle of Sacramento; This is a 
    reenactors event; Held on part of the original battlefield; Saturday night Military ball 
    features the 52nd Regimental Band: Ladies Tea, Pageants, battles Saturday and Sunday and a
     powder ration to preregistered reenactors; meal on Saturday evening; $5.00 registration

    *May 28, 29 and 30, 2010–Elkhorn, KY:  Reenactment at Elkhorn City, Kentucky; A community 
    event near the Breaks Park in Eastern Kentucky. The premise of the reenactment is unique 
    in that the battles are fought on an island in the Russell Fork River. The first 100 adult
     registrations will be eligible for the reenactors bounty. Registration is $5.00 per 
     reenactor until May 15, 2010. After this date the fee goes up to $8.00.  
    
    *May or June, 2010–Meadowview, VA; The 19th annual War Between the States Living History 
    Program at the home of Rob Salyer at Meadowview, Virginia; This is the 2nd longest 
    continuous Civil War event in Southwest Virginia; The 2 day event is attended by students 
    from the Washington County Virginia school system.
    
    June 4, 5 and 6, 2010-Morehead, KY: Living History at the old Rowan County Court House;

    *June 5, 2010–St. Paul, VA 12th annual Clinch River Days; The town is very excited about
     the living history event for the third time this season; this is a 1st Virginia sponsored
      event along with Camp 840 of the Sons of Confederate Veterans and Chapter 1828 0f the 
      United Daughters of the Confederacy; This is a one day living history event 
    
    *June 11, 12 and 13, 2010–Jonesville, Virginia; Battle of Jonesville; This year’s event 
    will be the 19th annual Battle at Jonesville The event is sponsored by Company E of the 
    37th Virginia Infantry and the Southern Guards Brigade. Contact:  jerryrparsons@hotmal.com
     
    
    *July 2, 3 and 4, 2010–West Jefferson, NC; Christmas in July; Battle of Boone, N. C.;
     This is a 1st Virginia Cavalry, Company D sponsored event; Christmas in July is one of
      the top summer festivals in the South and draws more than 20,000 visitors each day; 
      The camp site where the living history is held is in a nice shaded park with a 
      beautiful little stream running through it; Living History and Battles on Friday

    *July, 2010–Wise, Virginia; Battle of Wise/Cranesnest; In 2009 the event took place 
    on the 2nd weekend in July; Free registration for reenactors; Living History on Friday
     and battles Saturday and Sunday; Dinner Saturday and Breakfast catered; Church Service
      on Sunday; Pool Passes for reenactors and showers available at the pool. 
    
    **July 31 or August 7, 2010– Abingdon, Virginia; Living History at the 
    Highlands Festival; The Highlands festival is one of the top 100 tourist events in
     North America; The living history is set up along main street at the Fields-Penn 
     House; Last season the event was held on the 1st weekend in August; This is a 1st
      Virginia Company D sponsored event;
    
    **August 6, 7 and 8, 2010-Jenkins, KY: Thunder on the Mountain, the Return of John Hunt
     Morgan; Free registration; Living History on Friday with battles on Saturday and Sunday;
      Ghost Roast; Pound Gap Monument Dedication Service Sunday at 12:00 noon; One meal

    *August 13, 14 and 15, 2010-Saltville, VA; Battle of Saltville; This a 13th annual event
     and the 146th anniversary of both Saltville battles; The 1st Battle of Saltville was
      fought on October 2, 1864 and the 2nd Battle on Saltville was fought on December 20

    **September or October, 2010 – Living History; SW Virginia Settlers Museum; This is
    a 1st Virginia Company D sponsored living history event; Last year was our first 
    year at the farm; The museum features a functional 1890’s farmhouse and several
    outbuildings that are original to the site; It is a 67 acre open air museum 
    that sits on National Forest land located in Smyth County, Virginia near
    the town of Groseclose.

     This is a third annual event to be held at a reconstructed fort which stands as a 
     monument to the men that met in battle at Fort Sanders in 1863; Confederate reenactors 
     storm the fort and Union reenactors defend the breastworks; private entrance for 
     reenactors; battles Saturday and Sunday; Church service on Sunday; Great sutlers; This
      season the number of reenactors will be limited to 600; We need to send in our
